In-bul
In-bul (인불, ignis fatuus) is a phenomenon in which the In (Phosphorus) escapes the bones of a rotting corpse, sparking fire as it meets the air.
It was a phenomenon which occurred occasionally around graveyards and aejang-teus (애장터). Taking this motif, In-bul expands the conceptual framework of the first iteration of this ritualistic gesture - a conceptual reinterpretation of the “aejang” ritual - in In Place of Your Name (2023). While the latter was placed in Montreal, this work takes place in the mountain where my aunt is supposedly buried.
